Children of the Void

Robert Kahil

The being’s intestines churned violently with the lack of food.  Another twisting and the being bent its legs, the black scales of its underbelly hovering just above the snow.  Large spouts of steam escaped from its massive jaws as it panted heavily in pain.  Four muscular legs now felt weak under its weight.  It wavered to the left, drunkenly scrabbling at the ice to stay strong.

Keeping its balance forced another strong churning of its intestines, longer than before.  It whined loudly in pain, digging black claws into the snow.  The being lowered its head; empty stomach releasing dry heaves of rancid air.  Its long spine tipped tail jerked in the air, smacking against the trees.

A bluebird took flight in response.  The being flinched, snapping a reptilian head at the air.  Hissing, it swung the tail in a long arch in an attempt to strike the bird.  The prey was clipped in the wing; it quickly caught hold and flew higher into the trees. The being watched the bluebird vanish, a deep hiss dripping from its forked tongue.

It sniffed the air, cocking its head to each side and then tipping it to the sky.  The being blinked, nostrils catching a delicious scent that made its insides turn in anticipation.  Growling, it took the scent of fresh meat deep into its nerves.  Crouched low to the ground, it stepped forward.  Black eyes stared into the sky, deep in thought.

Moonlight shattered the darkness, spilling over the snow in a sparkling blue sheen.  Only its tail swung in wide, slow arcs; nothing else moved.  The eyes were unblinking despite the freezing air.  The cold did not bother the being; it was born in a frozen land.  Warmth would be welcomed graciously though.  Few minutes passed in silence, it finally cocked it's head, sniffed the air with hot drags.  Soft crackling disturbed the silence of the frightened forest.  The being looked around, heart lurching in a momentary fear.  It was too weak to confront anything head-on.  A sneak attack from behind was in order.  One taste of warm flesh would end the weakness, it'd get strong again!

Bright lights flashed over its eyes.  Flinching, tail swinging wildly, the being leaped into the underbrush.  It willed the prickly leaves to stop quivering but they didn't listen immediately.  Spiky knees bent low, it backed further into the darkness and foliage.  Lifting each leg at a time, it felt for any branches before gingerly stepping.  Silence, and then a groan.  The being swiveled it's narrow head from side to side.  Prey, much larger than the measly bird, was stalking quietly to the left.

Tiny razor teeth pulled from their lock as it's long maw opened slightly.  Saliva spilled over it's lower jaw.  Steam billowed out of irregular holes from the impact, wrapping around the leaves in intricate tendrils.  It lurked behind a thick tree, head tipping to gaze around it through the bushes.  A greenish hue circled the edges of it's vision, brain reflecting the most common color in it's surroundings.  The prey was human, short and bald, he wouldn't be hard to kill.

Being patient was in its nature, despite the pain.  The being bowed deeply, underbelly again scraping at the snow.  A leaf crunched in the distance, and ice cascaded from the bushes it disturbed.  Its heart pounded in a deep fury.  The human had stopped and turned in the direction of the being.  A barely audible warning growl escaped it's wide esophagus.

A metallic object swung in the direction of the being.  Cylindrical was the object's main feature.  The being's mind worked quickly.  It was a weapon of extermination.  Behind this vile weapon was food!  Joy at the mere concept of wonderful food almost clouded its mind from cunning but not quite.  Ducking lower still, the being curled its tail into a vicious point and waited three seconds.

The human's knee cap glowed a pulsing orange below blue material.  It was the weakest point of the human's body.  Growling loudly, the being slightly raised the tail over its head and lashed through the bushes.  Leaves scattered in a flurry and the human jumped back to leave the tail striking air.  A blinding white blur and the roar of an older being startled the creature.  Something hot struck thick organic plating above the right eye and glanced off tree bark nearby.

Pain briefly flared behind its eyes and the being froze.  Only for an instant and then it swiped hard at the human's leg.  Spines latched onto the flesh and tore the clothing.  Blood sprayed against the snow in a brilliant contrast and it shoved the tail deeper.  The human screamed and a horrendous explosion split the air from the left.

A triangular object whizzed directly over its vision and vanished.  A second explosion immediately tore closer and pinked off its nose horn.  Much too close to home.  The being roared and lurched its body to face the new enemy.  Deep growls warned the human of impending doom.  Without second thought the tail swung out of the leg and towards the other man.

It missed, striking only air.  The being suddenly froze and made a surprised clicking of the tongue.  A gun was cocked and it struck out towards the noise.  Hissing angrily, it scanned the nearby foliage.  Gargling gasps came from beside it.  It turned its head distractedly and watched.  Venom from the sharp barb of its tail was working its dark magic.

Organs were liquefying from the inside out.  Blood seeped from every pore as the skin began to deteriorate.  The being could see muscles convulsing violently and it lapped at the hot fluids delightedly.  Intestines churning in pleasure, the being hissed hungrily in response.  It decided to take care of the other distraction first though.

Survival was hand in hand with food.

Roaring, it launched itself along the path from which it originally took.  Eyes scanned the surroundings wildly.  The being occasionally sniffed at the ground in brief puffs of smoke for a scent.  A few feet later it found the scent.  And a new victim. With one last hiss, the being pinned it's body to the ground.  Black eyes glared at the fleshy man.

He was large and his extended gut was resting in odd angles against the tree.  The human's jowly face was topped with little hair.  Except a bushy hat that covered both ears well.  The human met the being's eyes- in turn it sent a course of rage through its veins.  Victims were never supposed to stare into it's eyes.  A challenge was being posed.  The traditional methods of it's homeland couldn't be met though.

In the Void it would have been in a massive stadium.  Its only chance to eat.  Three victims against one being.  Now it was no spectators and one victim.  This victim also had a weapon.  It was not recognizable but too weak for worry.  The victim hid six feet away in the foliage and slightly behind a tree.  Fear captivates the victim.

Patient, the being waited and watched.  Patient, the being prepared for the human's death.  Not a single muscle shifted.  Snow slowly began to cover scales and freeze blood.  It launched itself fast in a flurry and savage roar.  The human didn't even see.  Wanting a quick death at this disgrace to its time, the being twisted the neck with long talons.

It then bit into the skull in a delicious fury of blood.  When the being tightened its jaws the human stopped flailing.  Not a single sound was made by the victim in the seconds it took for life to pass.  The being tore the meat into its mouth and rolled it to a long neck.  It left the crater of skull and dipped lower against the body.  Droves of pleasure were washing the being's senses as the first bit of food it had in a month was devoured.

The feasting was quick as razor teeth plunged into flesh and tore and shredded.  Finally the meal was finished.  There was hardly anything but random strips on the unpleasant bone.  It craned its head into the sky to roar in satisfaction.  No noise responded.  Filled, the being slowly crawled towards the first victim.  Its lips drooped in disdain.  There was nothing but a lake of blood.  Pink steam billowed into the air as the heated fluids melted snow.

The venomous barb was designed to kill only.  The poison within it so potent it turns the entire body into useless red soup in a matter of minutes. Snorting at the loss of flesh, the being glared up at the sky.  It saw blackness with countless white dots.  A much more pleasing view than the bloodied skies of the Void.  The being continued down the path.  In new strength it began hearing loud whirring, smelled organic substances compiled together, and many more humans.  They were far but the being would catch up to them.
