MILD SPOILERS

I certainly enjoyed this sci-fi romp. The world is hectic, and it's calming to read through mellower plots and characters who (generally) aren't out to sabotage the rest of their "friends." Introducing an eclectic group of space travelers is an understatement.

The mystery surrounding Rosemary's background is intriguing. Though revealed quickly, the extent to which she is or isn't involved keeps nagging at the back of her head and introduces unique challenges to her ability to fit into the worlds around her. From there, we learn about the fears, anxieties, and small pleasures of everyone aboard- barring algae fuel guy Corbin and navigator Ohan, who are focused on much later in the story. The way Becky describes various alien species, either from the viewpoint of humans or other aliens, is masterful, along with their insights on political/societal differences.

Admittedly, given the overarching plot, certain story chapters could have been cut shorter. The visit to Sissix's homeworld and the planet with the bug swarms are a couple of examples. Captain Ashby's interplay with his gf about pacifism versus violence for survival also feels closer to looped conversations than plot or character progress.

A LOT of converging plotlines hit a cyclone-level of speed at the end. While fun, a little more buildup into the primary situation could have been worked into the story. The characters are so endearing that this doesn't matter too much. Highlights include the entirety of Dr. Chef; every interaction between Sissix and Ashby; the dark, quiet moment between Corbin and his father.

Overall, not the tightest story, but it won't do any harm to envelop yourself in the drama, comedy, and occasional pockets of action.

4.5/5
